Thomas Sears was the second of three children born to John Thomas Sears and Elizabeth Neagle. Drawn to Putnam County where Ed Mink's school of music was located, he met his future wife, Ida Jane Speak. After their courtship they married 6 Sep 1881. Their marriage produced 10 kids; William F "Frank", Charles D, Lenora "Nora", Nellie L, James Homer (died in infancy), Edith M, Lena P "Libby", Loreen R, Oscar R, and Francis E "Fannie".

A carpenter by trade, Thomas helped build many churches (the Concord and Chapel churches in particular) and several houses in Putnam county. According to a Roberta J Exline's family history "So to Speak", most were still standing 100 years later! He also carved wooden handles for tools.

At the age of 47, Tom succumbed to Bright's Disease, leaving his wife with all their kids still at home.
