Walter immigrated to the U.S. in 1867. In 1874, he was farming near Johnson, NE. He married Mary Jane Long, daughter of John Long, who gave the land to the city for Sheridan Cemetery. They married 12 Feb. 1874 in Sheridan, NE, now Auburn, NE. He farmed until 1911, when they moved into town. They had ten children. They were: Rachel Mary (Maria) (1874), Amelia A. (1876), Elizabeth (1878), Walter Samuel Jr. (1879), Mary (1882), John (1884), William "Will" (1886), Albert "Bert" (1887), Elmer Harrison (1889), & Roy Whitten (1891).
