Charles Hadley Spinning was born on January 23, 1821 in Franklin County, Indiana. He graduated from the Eclectric Medical College in Cincinnati, with a degree of Doctor of Medicine. On March 25,1852, Charles married Mildred Durley Stewart, near Vancouver, Washington. In 1854, Governor Stevens of Washington appointed him the doctor for the Nisqually Indian tribe, and two other tribes in the Pacific Northwest. Charles, or Charlie as he was commonly known as, contributed to the growth of Tacoma, WA, by selecting the place for the first sawmill there. He passed away on April 1, 1911 in Prosser, Washington. He was placed in the Tacoma Mausoleum, along with his wife and many family members.
