John B. Dow, 90, Civic Leader, Dies After Short Illness:
Funeral services for John Byrd Dow, 90, were held Sunday afternoon at the chapel of the Carver Funeral home. The Rev. Dow Ensor officiated and burial was in City cemetery.
Mr. Dow died Friday afternoon at a convalescent home in Sparta following a short illness. A native of Putnam County, Mr. Dow spent most of his life in Cookeville where he was active in civic affairs until his retirement a few years ago. Prior to entry in the lumber business he was a school teacher and in 1901 served a term as direct representative from Putnam County in the state legislature. In 1911 he was mayor of Cookeville and served eight years as postmaster during Wilson's administration.
He was one of the founders a trustee of Dixie College, a school located a the present site of Tennessee Polytechnic Institute. Later he served as a justice of the peace for the city of Cookeville and United States Commissioner with the federal court.
He was the son of the late David Linneas and Emily Harris Dow. His wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Owen of Franklin, died about 30 years ago.
Survivors include a son, David Dow, Cookeville; three daughters, Mrs. Curtis DuBois, Cookeville, Mrs. Bruce Angus, Grand Junction, CO, Mrs. Harold Duncan, Oak Ridge; five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
