JV Farwell, Jr. succeeded his father as President of JV Farwell & Co. wholesale dry goods (Chicago), one of the most successful companies of its time following the Chicago Fire.

He and his wife, Ellen Drummond, had one daughter, Katherine. Ellen Drummond Farwell died in 1912. Farwell married again, on 3 April 1919, in Coronado, CA, to Harriet Flower Dunlap Smith, daughter of James Monroe and Lucy Louisa Coues Flower. Mrs. Farwell died 26 Dec 1938. She had five children: Mrs. W. Dow Harvey of Lacomber, IL; Perry Dunlap Smith (Harvard, 1911) of Chicago; Lawrence Dunlap Smith (Harvard, 1912) of Lake Forest, Prof. Elliott Dunlap Smith (Harvard, 1913, LLB 1916, MA Hon Yale 1928) of New Haven; and Hermon Dunlap Smith (Harvard, 1921) of Lake Forest, IL.
