His full name is George Washington Dargan. He graduated from South Carolina College with distinction in 1821, receiving his degree of A. B. He then studied law at Society Hill with Josiah J. Evans, Esq., and was admitted to the bar in 1823. He practiced law at the Darlington Court House. In 1826 he was elected Commissioner in Equity for the Cheraw Equity District. In October 1842 he was elected to the Senate of South Carolina, and re-elected in 1846. He was elected Chancellor in 1847.
