MARYVILLE: Seven persons died in a fire at a frame home in the Mentor Community, about six miles from here, early today -- with officials calling the blaze the worst in Blount County history.
Officials said the dead, members of two familes, were apparently trapped by the quick-spreading flames and were unable to escape through metal frame windows that "acted like prison bars."
Larry E. Meridieth, 29, his wife, Sherry, 26, their two children, Wendy, 4, and Joseph, 7, Mr. Meridieth's sister, Mrs. Phyllis Pitts, 28, and her two children, Raymond, 3, and James Jr., 5, were killed.
