Ben was the son of John Wesley and Sarah Elmina Oliphant Wilhite. He married Doris Mae Lassman. Their children were Wanonia Ruth Smith Elrod and Carl Wesley Wilhite.

Benjamin Riley "Ben" Wilhite, 92, Humboldt, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 14, 1908, in Wright County, Mo., the son of John and Elmine Oliphant Wilhite. He moved to Moran in 1911 and to Humboldt in 1914.
He worked for Monarch Cement Co., then at Drake's Bakery from 1930-37 and at others until 1941. He was the owner of Humboldt Bakery from 1941-46. He then worked with Great Lakes Co. in Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, Oklahoma, Colorado and Wyoming. He owned Oil Well Servicing Co. from 1953 until his retirement in 1985.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Humboldt, and its men's club and senior choir. He was a Little League and youth baseball coach for many years.
He married Mary Gilbraith on June 22, 1930. She and an infant daughter, Benny Jo, died in December 1945. He married Doris Lassman in Edwardsville, Ill., on Aug. 23, 1948, and she survives.
He also is survived by a son, Carl of Olathe; a brother, Lester of Humboldt; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded by a daughter, Wanonia Elrod; two brothers, Lloyd Eugene and John Jr.; and five sisters, Ora Helisbeck, Emma Yockey, Lillian Barlow, Bernice Bain and Bertha Hunt.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. David Meier officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church after 12:30 p.m.
