DOUGLAS A. STEVENS SERVICE HELD HERE
Last rites for Douglas Arnold Stevens were held at the Slininger Chapel Wednesday at 2:00 p. m. The Rev. Arthur V. Long, pastor of the Methodist church, was in charge. Interment was in the Jefferson Cemetery.
Music was provided by C. C. Charles who sang, "Sweet Bye and Bye" and "Old Rugged Cross", and Mrs. Dean Barker accompanied her.
Casket bearers were Homer Hensley, Towner Livingston, W. E. S. Hutcheon, Guy Hensley, Charles Raaz and Art Gilliam.
Douglas Arnold Stevens, son of Ruben and Elizabeth Chance Stevens, was born Sept 26, 1861, in Washington Township, Greene County, and passed away April 4, 1949, at his home in Jefferson, at the age of 87 years, four months and eight days.
His boyhood days were spent on a farm in Washington Township where he attended the country schools.
On April 6, 1891, he was united in marriage to Martha Jane Rhoades. To this union eight children were born.
He farmed in Iowa for several years, later moving to Minnesota, where he lived for about four years. In 1916, he moved to the vicinity of Jefferson where he continued farming. About eight years ago he retired and moved to Jefferson where he has since lived.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; one daughter who died in infancy; 12 brothers and sisters.
Those surviving are his wife; his five sons, Fred, of Grand Junction, Henry of Scranton, Jake and Harry, both of Jefferson, and Earl, of Pipestone, Minn.; two daughters, Mrs. Grace Ganoe and Mrs. Martha Karber, both of Jefferson; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.
