By: Greg Kaylor

Buckner A well-known family in Cleveland lost their teenage daughter in a tragic car crash early Sunday morning in Chattanooga.

Shipley Buckner, 18, was the daughter of Jan Buckner of Cleveland and Ralph Buckner Jr., owner of Ralph Buckner Funeral Homes. Shipley Buckner died as the result of a single-vehicle crash which occurred in the 9600 block of Hixson Pike, around 12:55 a.m. Initial reports indicate the vehicle in which Buckner was a passenger, left the roadway and struck a tree, killing Buckner instantly, according to a family spokesperson.

Shipley Buckner was a senior at Baylor School in Chattanooga, and was set to graduate on June 4th.
The driver, not yet identified by Hamilton County authorities, was also a Baylor student and was treated at the hospital.

Investigation is ongoing.

She had been accepted to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and was to begin classes this fall.

While at Baylor, Buckner was a cheerleader for the basketball and football teams, a member of the Baylor choir and the Baylor Dance Team. She was also a member of the Baylor Theater and served a year as manager of the basketball team.

Buckner was a member of First Baptist Church where she was active in the youth group and a member of the church choir.
Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland, a life-long friend of the Buckner family, said he joins the community in expressing sympathy to the family.

"I have followed Shipley's achievements through the years and watched her grow into a beautiful young woman. She had enjoyed her years at Baylor and was excited about her graduation and her future at UTK. This is a tragedy for the family and our community," said Rowland.

The Buckner family released a statement this morning regarding the tragedy:
"Our family received the most devastating loss early Sunday morning, when our beloved daughter Shipley was taken from us. Our hearts are broken and we will never be the same. We love Shipley beyond words and were looking forward to celebrating her graduation from Baylor High School in just a few weeks. Just last week we learned that Shipley had been accepted to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, she was so excited about beginning her college years. Shipley lived life to the fullest, and loved her family and friends. The overwhelming support of our family, friends and the entire Cleveland community has touched our family, and we are forever grateful. We want Shipley's beautiful life to be remembered and lived out by helping others. Our family is establishing a scholarship fund in Shipley's honor. We will never forget her, and we will always love her! Thank you again for your support, kindness and your continued prayers."

The funeral will be held at First Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with family visitation to be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at First Baptist Church in downtown Cleveland.
