Son of Daniel Steele and brother of Ransom Steele.
He married Susannah. Their son, Albert B. is said to have been the first white child born in Lake Co., Illinois, just south of present day Libertyville on June 20, 1835. Albert was living in Advance, MI in 1891.

Richard settled near his brother and was one of three 'viewers' appointed by the county commissioners of Cook County to lay the road to the north State line, across the Des Plaines River. The road was laid out in December 1935 and established in March of 1836, being the first public road established by State authorities within the limits of Lake County.
Richard removed to Manitowoc in 1842 and said to have died in Manitowoc in 1876.
