Margaret Scofield 1923 - 2010 Margaret Scofield passed away peacefully in her home on May 7, 2010, surrounded and loved by her family. Margaret is survived by her twin sister, Mildred Peale of Thousand Oaks, CA; and her three daughters, Suzanne Bishop (Towne) of Tucson, Arizona, Christine Kelly (Patrick) and Karen Olney (Jon) of Bakersfield. She has six grandchildren: Darren and Mark Bishop, Jeremy and Jonathan Gage, Joni Sallee and Jeffrey Olney and eight great-grandchildren. She was born in Lost Hills, CA to Ben and Eva Hadlock and a family of eight siblings. Margaret attended school in Lost Hills, Wasco, Bakersfield College, and San Jose State where she earned her teaching credential. A few years later, she became a speech therapist. In 1951, Margaret met and married Len Scofield. Together they built a home, raised a family, and worked as teachers. Margaret taught school and was a speech therapist with the Beardsley School District. In addition, she and Len operated the Ferris wheel at Hart Park on weekends and holidays. Upon retiring from teaching, Margaret and Len traveled thousands of miles in their camper, from Alaska to Mexico and Carpinteria to Washington, DC. They visited China, Europe, Alaska, Japan, and Australia. Margaret's life had both roots and wings. Her roots were deeply embedded in her home and family whom she loved deeply and protected fiercely. Her wings are those of us left to pass on the love and integrity she and Len shared with each of us. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to those who tended to Margaret's care in the past year: Dr. Baker, Dr. Ashraff, Pacifica Senior Living, Hoffmann Hospice, and Linda, her caretaker from Visiting Angels. Contributions can be made in Margaret's memory to the American Heart Association , the American Cancer Society , or an organization of your choice. Her graveside service will be held May 11 at 10:30 at Greenlawn Cemetery on River Blvd. and Panorama Drive. www.bakersfield.com/obits
