THE PARIS NEWS Tue., Sep. 8, 1992, p.1A. ‘...73, longtime civic leader, died Mon., Sep. 7, at McCuistion Regional Medical Center. Services at 10 a.m. Wed. at Holy Cross Episcopal Church with Father Thomas Keithly and Father Richard Allen. Gene Roden’s Sons Funeral Home in charge. Born in Richmond, VA, a son of Nathan J. Bell II and Marie Estell Bell, he attended Charlotte Hall Military Academy, Maryland University in Baltimore, and Paris Junior College. He graduated from East Texas State Teachers College in 1948 with a BBA in accounting. He was a member of the Maryland National Guard when he was called unto service in the U.S. Army in 1941. [more] He married Sara Margie Wilson in Paris, Jun. 18, 1944. In 1948, he was elected mayor of Paris and the youngest mayor in the U.S. He served 3 terms on the Paris City Council, 2 terms on the Paris Independent School Board of Trusties, and 2 terms on the Paris Junior College Board of Regents. [more] Surviving are his wife; 2 sons, Jim Bell of Paris and Gary Bell of Dallas; a daughter, Janet Allen of Dallas; a half-brother, Richard James Bell of Atlanta, GA; his step-mother, Alma Adcocks White of Atlanta, GA; and 6 grandchildren.’
