John Thomas Leader was born in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, England in 1822, to John and Rhoda Leader. He was baptized on 15 January, 1822 in Long Sutton, Lincolnshire, England.
The family left London when John was 12, arriving in New York, on 13 October, 1834, aboard the Brig Meridian
He immigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1848, where he married Eliza Jane Seamans, daughter of Thomas Seamans and Mary Ann Carder. He and Eliza was the parents of 3 children: Mary Annette "Nettie", Harriet Jane "Hattie" and Charles Dennison Leader. He was a cabinetmaker, having a business in Otterville. He died 7 July 1880, at age 58, in Embro, Ontario, Canada. After his death, his wife and daughters moved to Manistee, Michigan. Son Charles remained in Ontario after his father's death, and then moved to the Seattle, Washington area in 1915.
