Olaf was born in 1884 in Sweden, son of Anton Wilhelm Sahlbom and Mathilda Kristina Dahlstedt. His father emigrated alone to America on 29 May 1885, and on 7 May 1886, Mathilda and Olaf left Sweden on the steamship HEKLA, and arrived in New York on 28 May 1886.

Olaf was a tallyman at E. K. Woods Company. He moved to Ephrata, Washington, and was in partnership with a Bellingham lawyer, Mr. Peringer, and bought a fruit orchard. He came back to Bellingham after the death of his first wife, Anna Marie (Persson), in 1917, of tuberculosis.

Olaf & Anna had a son (died in infancy) and four daughters: Gladys Marie (Mrs. Oscar Ostrom), George Olaf, Ethel Mathilda (Mrs. Paul Robertson), Martha Margaret (Mrs. Stewart Aldrich) and Alice Lillian (Mrs. Cecil Remington.)

Olaf married a second time to on May 25, 1923, in Mount Vernon, Skagit County, Washington, to Bertha Marie Hansen Nygaard, a Norwegian, and had a daughter and three sons: Arlene Marion (Mrs. Byron Meyer), George Severine, Kenneth Lloyd and Eugene Norman Sahlbom.

Olaf died of a coronary occlusion at the age of 58 in Bellingham, Washington.
