Attorney Benjamin P. Alschuler, 68, of Aurora died Thursday, March 1, 2001 at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, IL.
    He was born in Aurora on February 5, 1933, the son of Jacob E. and Carolyn Strauss Alschuler.
    He attended the West Aurora Schools graduating from West High in 1951. Ben was an Honors graduate of the University of Virginia and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. From 1955 to 1957, he served on active duty as an officer in the United States Navy. After receiving his J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School, he was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1960 and returned to Aurora to join the Aurora Firm of Alschuler, Putnam and McWethy. He practiced with that firm and its successors until 1996 when he became a partner in the Chicago firm of Wildman, Harrold, Allen and Dixon. On January 1, 2001, Ben and his partners, Donald Simantz and Ronald Hem, established the new firm of Alschuler, Simantz and Hem in Aurora. He was a member of the Kane County, Illinois and American Bar Associations and the Illinois Workmen's Compensation Lawyers Association. Active in Community affairs, he was a leader in the formation of Mental Health and Retardation Services, Inc. He also served as Board President for the Family Counseling Service and was for many years a member of the Board of Governors of Rush-Copley Medical Center. In 1968 he was the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Congress. He had been a member of the Board of Directors of Aurora College/University for nearly 30 years. He served as Chairman of the Board from 1981 to 1986. Ben very much enjoyed his many friends and was an avid golfer. He was a longtime member of the Aurora Country Club.
    Ben is survived by his wife of 45 years, Anne (Cockfield); daughter, Carolyn of Scottsdale, AZ; and son, John (Dee) of Stuttgart, Germany. Additional survivors include his sister, Rosalie (Bernard) Goldstein of Milwaukee, WI; brother, George (Maryann) Alschuler of Alameda, CA; and uncle Sam Alschuler of Aurora; as well as a niece and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
    Visitation will be at Healy Chapel, Aurora on Monday, March 5, from 4 until 8 PM. Funeral Services will be held at the Healy Chapel, Aurora on Tuesday, March 6, 2001 at 11 AM with the Rev. Gary McCann officiating. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery, Aurora.
