John Jelinek age 88 of Winner, SD passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at his home in rural Winner.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 17th at 10:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner.
Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery.
Visitation will begin on Sunday, May 16th from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM with a prayer service at 5:00 PM at the church.
John was born May 22, 1921 to Frank and Francis (Petracek) Jelinek on a farm south of Jordan. He was the youngest of eleven children.
In 1930, the family moved five miles south of Winner to what is now the family farm. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School and rural school through the 7th grade.
He married Maxine Crabtree on May 27th, 1943, making their home on this farm. John farmed with his father until his father's tragic death in 1953.
John and Maxine continued on the farm where they raised their five children.
In addition to farming and milking cows, John was also a beekeeper and an electrician.
His wife, Maxine, preceded him in death on April 5, 2006.
John was a life-long member and usher of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Winner, a member of the Knights of Columbus, ZCBJ Lodge, past chairman for the Wilson Township Board, and active in 4-H rodeos.
He loved working with horses and in his retirement years loved to restore antique machinery. He restored 4 tractors and numerous pieces of farm machinery and displayed them several times in the local parades.
He very much enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his five children; LeRoy (Joyce) Jelinek, Twila (Gene) Rice, Rita (Ray) Neyens, Valora (Randy) Eddie and Keith (Sheri) Jelinek all of Winner, SD; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews which are grateful for having shared his life.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Francis, four brothers; Joseph, Jerry, Frank and an infant brother, six sisters Rosie, Anna, Marie (Antoinia), Agnes, two infant sisters and a great-granddaughter Keely Ann McCall.
John was a very special person that will be deeply missed.
