Carol George Hawkins, 76, of 1109 4th Ave., Parkersburg, died Saturday, August 30, 1997 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center.
Carol was born May 24, 1921 in Stewartville, Minnesota, the son of Jason and Tina (Goeman) Hawkins.
Carol was united in marriage to Sophia Boelman, December 13, 1946 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.
Carol and Sophia farmed north of Parkersburg for 35 years. Carol also drove school bus for the Parkersburg Community School District for 29 years. The couple moved to town in 1982.
Carol was a member of the American Legion Post #285 of Parkersburg for over 50 years, the Parkersburg Lions Club, and the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg.
Preceding Carol in death were his parents; a son, Gaylen; and a half-sister, Betty Novak.
Survivors include his wife Sophia; a daughter Phyllis and her husband Michael Oglesby of Grundy Center; two grand-children Mark and Abby Oglesby; a sister Margorie Hanson of Chippewa Falls, WI; two half-brothers Patrick and his wife Donna Hawkins of Oceanside, CA and Michael Hawkins of Chicago, Ill.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 2, 1997 at 1:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg with Pastor Ken Carr officiating. Linda Truax was the organist and Stan Thompson vocalist. Songs were "Where The Roses Never Fade" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Flower committee was Irene Stickley, "Babe" Simon, and Fran Reints. Car driver was Clarence Karsjens. Honorary pallbearers were Ed Thomas, Virgil Goodrich, Duane DeGroote, and Everett Jensen. Pallbearers were: Mark Oglesby, Vern Byl, Virgil Byl, Paul Schipper, Wayne Wagoner, and Myron Aalderks.
Interment was in the Oak Hill Cemetary with Military graveside services conducted by the American Legion Post #285 of Parkersburg.
Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center was in charge of arrangements.
