Bernie died of Cancer at Delaware County Memorial Hospital in Manchester IA.

Funeral at Our Saviour Lutheran Church. Pastor Michael Schmid will officiate.

Born Aug. 12, 1921, in Elk Creek, a son of Halsey Leonard and Mary Aileen Combs Sabin, he attended Elk Creek country school. He married Juanita Mae Sly on Sept. 17, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. He farmed for 17 years in the Edgewood and Greeley communities. He then worked for the Delaware County Road Department for 24 years, 11 years as maintainer operator and 13 years as road foreman, retiring in 1987. He served in the European Theatre during World War II. He was a member of Edgewood American Legion Post 45.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita; a daughter, Sharon Christensen of Goddard, Kan.; a son, Robert of Centerville, Ohio; two brothers, John of Greeley and Paul of Cedar Rapids; and three sisters, Lylas Pensel and Phyllis Salow, both of Earlville, and Kay Kruger of Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Anna Mae Hansen of Manchester; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
