Edward Joseph Kniery, 85, of Springfield passed away on May 16, 2010.

Ed was born August 8, 1924, in Litchfield, the son of S. Joseph and Anna (Jordan) Kniery. He married T. Eileen Stahler on September 24, 1949. She preceded him in death on October 26th 2007.

He was preceded in death by his beloved brothers and sisters, Jerome (Jerry), Michael (Mike), Margie, and Ann.

He is survived by brothers and sister, James, Sister Clarice, and Joseph; sons and daughter, Stephen (Bonnie Vanderwater) of Scottsdale AZ, Mark (Connie Pennington) of Chatham, John (Debbie Green)of Springfield, Mary (Kevin Kennedy) of Danville, James (Penne Wright) of Mesa AZ; thirteen grandchildren, Heather, Ryan, Gwen, Shannon, Mandi, Mark, Krista, Jake, Scott, Brian, David, Caitlin, and Michael; and seven great grandchildren, Breeanna, Karli, Taelor, Dylan, Drew, Aleska, and Alarah.

He was very proud to have served his country in the Pacific Theater as a Marine in World War II. He was in the 4th division, seeing action in the Marshall Islands and Iwo Jima campaigns. Ed enjoyed working For Bunn Capitol and Bunn O-Matic, retiring in1989. His legacy of commitment and giving to the community begins with the Knights of Columbus. He was a 4th degree Knight and served as an Officer including Faithful Navigator. He and his wife were lifelong members and supporters of Blessed Sacrament Church and school. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and sang in the choir for many years. He was Senior Counselor of United Commercial Travelers. He was a volunteer for the Special Olympics, and chaired the event one year. He was a Red Jacket at St. John's Hospital, and served on the Bread Line. He was Cub Scout master of Troop 31. He and Eileen were members of the Saturday Night Dance Club. He was a Springfield Volunteer of the Year.

Ed loved to sing Irish songs and tell Irish jokes. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Two of his favorite sayings were: Don't ever lose your sense of humor; if you lose your sense of humor, it's all over.
If you think worrying about it will help, well then go ahead and worry. Ed had a great love for his family and friends, and them for him. He will be greatly missed.

Family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 21, 2010 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 10:00 A.M.

Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
