After the death of his mother in 1934 (his father had died a few years earlier in 1929), William and his sister, Vera, were taken in by their mother's sister, Florence Delores Dorsh and her husband, Godfrey R Sumicek. William was legally adopted by his aunt and uncle a few years before he enlisted in the army in 1942. He married Marjorie Rose (Vessels) Sumicek in the same year and they later had six children.
