Andrew mustered in the Confederate States Army on 4 March 1862 at Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia and elected as Captain of Company I, 49th Georgia Infantry. He was promoted to Colonel on 22 May 1862. He received a severe wound through his elbow at the Battle of Mechanicsville on 26 June 1862. He was not able to recover fully to be fit for field duty and tendered his resignation letter on 5 May 1863. His resignation was approved on 8 May 1863.
