JOSEPH CHESTER "PICKLE" MATTINGLY, 67, of St. Francis, died July 1 at his residence. Mr. Mattingly was a native of St. Francis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Henrietta McGee Mattingly and his parents, Thomas Owen and Mary Ida Cross Mattingly. An Army veteran, he received five bronze stars for participation in the Normandy invasion and the European Theater Campaign during World War II. Survivors include: one sister, Mrs. Clifton "Mildred" Helm of Lebanon; two brothers, Eugene and Viella Mattingly of Loretto; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., July 3 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. Rev. David W. Denneler officiated. Pallbearers were Spencer Miles, Roger Mattingly, Mike Mattingly, Harold Young, Boone Blair and Eugene Hamilton. Prayer services were held at the funeral home on July 2. Mattingly Funeral Home, Loretto, was in charge of the arrangements.
