David Arlyn Wassom passed away Friday morning, May 14, 2010, in the loving arms of his wife Joyce. He fought a valiant battle against Parkinson disease, being cared for in his home, maintaining his wonderful sense of humor until the end. Arlyn was born August 16, 1930 in Tremonton, Utah, to Leslie E & Loenza Barnett Wassom. He grew up in Garland, farming, milking cows, & acquiring a great love for the land & outdoors. He often said he would have loved to have spent his life farming. Arlyn graduated from Bear River High School. He was an outstanding athlete in track, football, and his love, basketball. He also played church basketball and followed up in the Army and National Guard, coaching his guardsman team to the State championship. He also enjoyed following the Jazz & BYU teams.

After high school, Arlyn joined the National Guard until enlisting in the Army where he spent 3 years in Japan. After returning home, he reenlisted in the National Guard, retiring after nearly 30 years of service. He loved his country and served with honor. In 1953, Arlyn married Joann Kidman in the Logan LDS temple. From this union were born 3 precious daughters and 1 beloved son. Arlyn spent those early years loving his children, where they lived in Garland and Farmington, and instilling in them his great appreciation for the diverse and natural beauty of Utah.

Jobs he held over the years included, HAFB, Anderson Lumber, Utah National Guard, Thiokol, & Clearfield Job Corp, from which he retired in 1995. Arlyn was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings over the years. His beliefs ran deep & in later years renewed his commitment, returning to the temple, never wavering. Following his divorce in 1977, he spent his free time traveling & exploring the dirt trails, mountains and valleys of Utah. He was an avid hiker & photographer & captured the beauty of his beloved home state in countless albums.

In 1988, he married his best friend & love, Joyce Nussbaum Jenkins. He was very caring & supportive of her 4 children and 3 grandchildren. His family loved and welcomed Joyce as a part of them & many happy times were spent together. He loved taking Joyce to the places he had traveled with his job, and of course his favorite places in southern Utah, where he also instilled this love of Utah in his stepson Jeramy. Arlyn was a quiet man, never seeking the limelight, but always the first to lend a hand to neighbors. Arlyn could be found countless mornings on the canyon roads cleaning up trash to keep his beloved Utah clean and beautiful. He loved serving the elderly, taking meals on wheels to them as long as he could walk and drive. He volunteered at Antelope Island for years. He loved Joyce and her music & even sang their favorite song with her on occasion in his beautiful tenor voice.

Arlyn was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Robert E. Wassom, Leslie Vaughn Wassom, & Harold Merrill Wassom.

He is survived by his wife Joyce, sisters Alice June Stenquist & Mary Loenza Freeman. Also, daughters Sheryl Lynn Johnson (Richard), Cynthia Wassom, Julie Ann Murray (Dan), & Jeffrey Arlyn Wassom. Stepdaughters Nichole Jenkins, Danielle Jenkins, stepsons Sean H. Jenkins (Lorie) & Jeramy R.Jenkins (Karin), also 18 grandchildren & 10 great grandchildren.
He will be loved and missed by all, and we are so grateful for our experiences with him. The family would like to thank Dr.David Renner, the exceptional care given by the Legacy Healthcare & Hospice, and especially his loving wife Joyce for her tireless loving care of our dad and grandpa.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ogden City Cemetery, 1875 Monroe Blvd., where full military honors will be accorded.
