Lt. Col. Bartz was assigned to Headquarters, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York, and served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1 (Personnel). He was killed in Kabul, Afghanistan of wounds suffered in a suicide car bombing. Bartz was part of a team conducting a site survey in advance of the division headquarters deployment in the fall. Paul attended Waterloo High School in Waterloo, Wisconsin where he was a linebacker on the school's 1983 conference championship team. Even at that age, he displayed leadership qualities and the will to succeed. Upon graduation in 1985, he decided to attend college and joined the Army ROTC at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Paul found a home in the military and quickly moved up the ranks. His awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and Army Achievement Medal. Paul was the type of person who would succeed at whatever he attempted and was a people's person. He is survived by his wife and son.
