John Cummings, of Chicago, a former Delavan boy met with an accident Sept 17, shortly after 1pm from which he died in St Luke's Hospital about seven hours later. Deceased was Supt. of the Holland Construction Company and had in charge at the time of the erection of the structural iron on the Boston Store, State and Madison Streets, Chicago. It was while inspecting this work that the accident occurred. He was crossing the eighth story on boards laid down for that purpose, when they broke under his weight hurling him to certain death 60 ft below. The poor battered bleeding body was picked up and tenderly conveyed to St Luke's hospital, where heroic measures we resorted to, but without avail as he died at 820pm, seven hours after the fatal fall. The subject of this sketch was born in Darien in 1862. Moved to Chicago twenty years later, where he has since resided. Was married to Miss Sarah Brophy of Mukwaonago. To this union were born two children, Mattie and Willie aged 15 and 9 yrs respectively both of whom survive him. The wife after a protracted illness covering several months passed from this world's cares some two years ago. Besides his two sons there are left to mourn, a mother Mrs. William Cummings of Delavan; five brothers, Richard, William, and Henry of Chicago; James, Chas and two sisters. Lizzie and Mrs. C Gosso of this vicinity. The remains at the request of the heart broken mother was brought back to the old home for burial accompanied by his two sons, two brothers, William and Henry and the undertaker Mr. P J Cummings of Chicago. The vast assemblage at the station awaiting the final home coming of their friend and former associate attested a love and esteem that twenty years absence could not sever. After short services and a consoling sermon by Father Buckley the body was laid to rest in the family lot in St Andrews Cemetery.
