Doctor, Physicist. He is regarded as a seminal figure in nuclear medicine. Born the son of teachers in South Dakota, Lawrence graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1926 and received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. After serving as an instructor of medicine at Yale University, he went to California in 1935 to join his older brother, future Nobel Prize-winner Dr. Ernest Lawrence, in Berkeley to work with Ernest's newly created cyclotron. The following year he founded the Donner Laboratory at the University of California Berkeley and later served as its Director from 1948 until his retirement in 1970. The first laboratory dedicated to the study of nuclear medicine, it pioneered the use of radiation as a treatment for illnesses. Lawrence was one of the survivors of the sinking of SS Athenia, torpedoed by U30 on the day Britain declared war on Germany, 3rd September 3, 1939. In 1970 he was appointed to the University of California Board of Regents, serving until 1983.
