Funeral services were held Wednesday in First Presbyterian Church in Cooperstown for Donald J. Hegvik of Jamestown and formerly of Cooperstown. Mr. Hegvik died last Tuesday (Sept. 23, 2008) at Hi-Acres Manor in Jamestown. He was 74.
Interment was in the Cooperstown Cemetery.
Donald J. Hegvik was born January 9, 1934, the son of John and Marie (Simon) Hegvik in Sioux Falls, SD. He attended several schools in North Dakota and graduated from Westhope High School in 1954, where his father served as superintendent of schools.
He had a draying busines in Westhope until 1955 when he entered the U. S. Army, serving in Iceland until 1957, when he was discharged. He then worked for a roofing company, bottling company and several restaurants before entering St. Cloud Business College and earning an accounting degree in 1959.
Mr. Hegvik worked as an orderly, bookkeeper, and maintenance engineer in several nursing homes and hospitals, including the Griggs County Hospital in Cooperstown. He served as custodian at Main Line Unitarian Church in Devon, PA until 1989 when he moved to be with his mother after the death of his father.
He moved to Jamestown in 1988 and made his home there.
Survivors include one brother, Ted of Edmonds, WA; one uncle Alton Hegvik of Glenfield; and various nieces, nephews and cousins.
