Frank A. Njirich, a Tuolumne County native, carpenter and 20 year Navy man, died Sunday at a Sonora hospital.
Mr. Njirich, 77, served in the Navy from 1937 to 1957. He was aboard the USS Detroit in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked. He served during World War II and the Korean War.
After serving in the military, Mr. Njirich was a carpenter in Tuolumne County for many years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Fleet Reserve Association.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jeane Njirich of Sonora; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jackie Njirich of Sonora; one daughter, Nicki Lynn Van Bebber of Sonora; four brothers, John Njirich of Columbia and Fred, George and Louis Njirich of Sonora; two sisters, Mae Hobby of Hughson and Annie Conrado of Angels Camp; five grandchildren and one grandson-in-law, Shanda and Keith Schertz of Rawhide, Scott Van Bebber of Jamestown, Steven Van Bebber of San Francisco and Angie and Lindsey Njirich of Sonora; two great-grandchildren, Shane and Allissa Schertz of Rawhide, and numerous nieces and nephews.
