"THIES, JOAN S. Joan S. Thies, longtime resident of La Jolla, passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2009, in Issa-quah, Washington. She was 81. Joan was born in Burnley, England in 1927. During World War II, she worked at an airbase in England where she met her husband Louis W. Thies. Joan came to the United States after the war and they were married in Dayton, Ohio, in 1947. Joan and Louis lived in Dayton until 1957 when they moved to California. In 1972, the family settled in La Jolla. Joan loved La Jolla and had many friends throughout the San Diego area. Her passions included playing tennis and bridge in her leisure time. She also enjoyed floral arranging and worked as a travel agent for several years. Joan and the family were devout parishioners of All Hallows Catholic Church in La Jolla. In 2005, Joan moved to Issaquah, Washington, to be closer to her son and family. Joan is remembered by her family and friends as a loving wife, mother and grandmother who possessed a generous and fun loving spirit. She was always the bright spot in the room and also enjoyed making others feel special. Joan also took great pleasure in remembering the birthdays or other special occasion of her family and friends with a card or present."
