Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. Paroled at Point Lookout on or about November 1, 1864, and transferred to Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia, where he was received on November 15, 1864, for exchange. Reported absent without leave through February, 1865.

The marker inscription is in error. He was not in Company "F", 35th Regiment, NC Troops. That was another John E. Smith, son of David N. Smith.
