Russell W. Wettstyne, age 85, Baraboo, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 1989, at St. Mary's Hospital in Sparta.

He was born on March 30, 1903, and was a graduate of the Baraboo High School class of 1920. His wife, Betty, brother Leo and sister Eleanor preceded him in death. Survivors are one brother, Roy, and many relatives and friends.

Mr. Wettstyne retired from the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in 1968 as director of transportation and flight operations. Prior to associating with Firestone, he served as assistant insurance manager and traffic manager of Marshall Field and Company of Chicago.

Previously, he was associated with Sears & Roebuck and Company as transportation analyst. He served with the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1920 through 1921. He also served in the U.S. Army Transportation Corp. with the rank of major from 1942 through 1944.

He attended the University of Akron and Northwestern University, where he majored in accounting and transportation law. He was also a graduate of Madison College.

Mr. Wettstyne participated in numerous professional and civic organizations. He served a number of years as vice chairman of the Akron,. Ohio, chapter of the Red Cross. He was an active member of the American Trucking Association, the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers, the American Society of Traffic and Transportation, and the National Industrial League, of which he was a member of the board of directors.

He was also an active member of the traffic committee of the Manufacturing Chemists Association and the Rubber Manufacturers Association.

Mr. Wettstyne was a past president of the Transportation Club of Chicago and the Traffic Club of Akron, Ohio, the National Defense Transportation of Ohio and the Great Lakes Regional Advisory Board, of which he also served as board chairman. He was also past president of the Baraboo Chapter of the AARP during 1973 and 1974, and was presently a member of its board of directors. He was also serving as chairman of the Sauk County Commission on Aging since its inception in 1974. Likewise, he servied as secretary-treasurer and chairman of the finance committee of the area Agency on Aging, Madison, comprising 11 southern counties, and was also a member of its board of directors.

He was a member of the American Legion and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Baraboo.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 30, 1989 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Interment will be at St. Thomas Cemetery in Omro, Wis. at a later date.
