Major League Baseball Player. Carl was born and raised in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and was the third of seven children. He attended Davison College in Davidson, North Carolina for the 1908 academic year. After taking a year off, he went on to Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina for the 1910 academic year. Carl was a pitcher, pinch hitter and right fielder. He was a right-handed pitcher and a left-handed batter. According to Neuroscience News, this is occurs in 2 percent of the general population. He began his career in 1910 with the D Level Greenville Spinners in Greenville, South Carolina. In his two seasons with the Spinners, he played 79 games. 26 of these games he pitched in with 11 wins and 14 losses. He had a batting average of .272, with 247 plate appearances. He played for the Major League Washington Senators from 1911 to 1914. According to Baseball Magazine, he had a fast fastball but was unable to control it. In his 4 seasons with the Senators, he played in 72 games. 43 of these games he pitched, with 30 starts, 1 shutout, 1 save, 12 wins, and 13 losses. He pitched 255.2 innings with a 3.70 earned run average, 114 strikeouts, and 170 walks. He had a batting average of .301 with 165 plate appearances. Beginning in 1915 he played for the AA Level Minneapolis Millers in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In his five seasons with the Millers he played in 291 games. 30 of these games he pitched, with 8 wins and 12 losses. He had a batting average of .310 with 927 plate appearances.
