Schulze, Walter Herman, Captain (Cavalry), USA. Born 2 Sept 1893 in Chicago, Illinois. Graduated as 2nd Lt. from the U.S. Military Academy on 20 April 1917 and promoted to 1st Lt. on 14 May 1917. Sent to France with 3rd Cavalry on 15 October 1917 and received preliminary flying training in the Caudron G-3 at 2nd AIC, Tours, 28 July - 15 August 1918. Received advanced combat flying training in the Nieuport series at 3rd AIC, Issoudun, 18 August - ca. 11 November 1918, and was C.O. of Field #9 while undergoing flying instruction. Assigned to 185th A.S. flying the Sopwith Camel, 11 November 1918 - April 1919; 41st A.S. flying the Squad XIII, April-18 May 1919; 138th A.S. ca. 14 June 1919 as Flight Commander. On 28 June 1919 Capt. Schulze was killed in the crash of his Spad XIII. WWI Decoration; WWI Victory Medal. Captain Schulze was first interred in the Coblenz American Cemetery, and later reinterred in the Military Cemetery, West Point, New York.
