At the age of seven, Frederic came to America with his family on the Steamship Wisconsin. During the voyage, he and his brother Edward "Ted" would get up early every morning and make there way up to the deck to talk to the sailors.
Shortly after arriving in New York, the Ottley family took a train to Utah. They were met by Frederic's grandfather, Edward Ottley Sr, who took the young family to his home, where they lived for a year before getting a home of their own.
Frederic went to the 26th District School until about the 6th or 7th grade. After that, he worked for his father, a contractor who worked on houses.
He met Ethal Brown around 1896, and the two started a courtship around 1898. Four years later, the two were driving along in a horse and buggy one day. As he often did, Fred was singing "Sweet Bunch of Daisies," when suddenly he stopped, turned to Ethal, and asked what she thought about getting married.
In February of 1902, Fred came to visit Ethal at work and took her for a ride again in the horse and buggy. Just a few blocks down the road, he gave her a ring.
The two were married in the Salt Lake Temple on November 12, 1902 by John R. Winder. They had eight children.
Frederic died in 1968 at the age of 90. His wife followed him in death in 1969.
My great-great grandfather.
