Mr. Jack Birtolette "J.B." Sutphin Jr., 61, of Stone Road, Frederick, died peacefully after a lengthy illness on Thursday evening, December 7, 2006, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Linda Rice Sutphin.

Born January 30, 1945, in Alexandria, Va., Mr. Sutphin was a son of the late Jack B. Sr. and Virginia Elizabeth Payne Sutphin.

Mr. Sutphin served faithfully with the United States Marine Corps from 1966 until 1969, having served two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He was employed for over 18 years with the State of Maryland Prison Systems in Hagerstown, until the time of his illness.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Morris Donald Hewitt III of Frederick; one daughter, Angel Renee Zirkle and husband Douglas of New Market; one brother, Ronald Lewis Sutphin of Melbourne, Australia; three grandchildren, Zachary Morris Hewitt of Frederick, Ethan Douglas Zirkle and Joel Thomas Zirkle, both of New Market; nephews, Michael Wayne Sutphin and Nathaniel James Sutphin; and niece Donna Marie Sutphin, all of Australia.

The family will receive friends at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., on Monday, Dec. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 1 p.m. from the Etchison Memorial Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Charles G. Beekley will officiate. Interment will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
