Frank Torrence was born in Winterset, Iowa, and spent most of his youth in Iowa. Aug. 8, 1916, he married Lois Isabell Sixbury. He began teaching high school in Flora, IL. He then moved to Sparta, IL, where he was principal of Sparta Township High School for 27 years and member of the faculty since 1916. He resigned Aug. 5, 1952 due to poor health.

"Mr. Torrence, critically ill in a St. Louis hospital, sent his resignation to the board of education, which had contemplated granting the veteran school principal a leave."

At Sparta High School, Frank Torrence was the founder of an annual inter-high school basketball competition, which is to this day, called Sparta's Torrence Tournament. The tournament celebrated it's 90th year in 2010.
