Son of the late Frank and Eddie Mae Sample Meekins, he was the widower of Mary Elizabeth Merrick Meekins. He was a veteran of WWII (United States Coast Guard) and participated in the Normandy invasion. He was a retired tugboat captain with McAllister Brothers, Inc., and was an active member and board member of the Seafarer's Union. He was a founder of the Snug Harbor Community Church. He was survived by a daughter, Cheryle Pritchett Tyrrell (Jimmy); a son, Kerry "Buster" Meekins; a brother, Monroe Meekings, and an extended family of relatives. His funeral was officiated by Stanley Nixon.
