Elmer was born 5 Feb 1917, in Marathon City to the late Hubert and Sophie (Kloth) Kufahl. He married Myrtle Randell on 30 Apr 1949. She preceded him in death 3 Feb 1962. Elmer served in the US Army during World War II in Central Europe. Elmer worked at Wausau Papers for 43 ½ years. He loved to garden, cook and bake. Other passions were hunting and fishing in many surrounding lakes, and he made many fishing trips to Canada with his two sons. Elmer was "well" known at the Wausau Log Jam as "The Wood Carver." He not only carved the deer, moose, bear, antelope, oxen and a hodag, but he created many unique things which are located across the US.
Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy (Bob) Nieuwenhuis and Charlotte Laffin, all of Wausau; two sons, Fred (Barb) Bender of Wausau and Leslie (Carol) Kufahl of Crystal Falls, Mich.; 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Leroy (Pat) Kufahl of Merrill; on sister Esther Clemens of Wausau; one sister-in-law, Audrey Kufahl of Virginia Beach, VA; three nieces and five nephews. Elmer was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Hilbert "Chief;" on grandson, Steve Bender; one brother-in-law, George Clemens; one son-in-law, Norman Laffin; and one nephew, Neil Clemens.
Funeral services will be at 1 pm Monday, 10 Sep 2007, at the Helke Funeral Home, Wausau. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Park, Wausau. Visitation will be from 11 am until the time of services Monday at the funeral home.
