Tannie Tura Newman Johnson, 100, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, March 18, 2016 in Mount Pleasant. A service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21 at Gladewater Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant. Burial followed at Gladewater Cemetery under the direction of Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home of Mount Pleasant.
She was born on Jan. 17, 1916 in Titus County to Lee Anderson Newman and Lucy Marion Sparks Newman.
She was a member of Gladewater Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant.
Tannie was survived by her son and daughter-in-law Gilbert Roy “Gib” and Sue of Cookville; her daughter and son-in-law, Genevieve Robinson and husband Gene of Mount Pleasant; her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon Ross and husband Sid of Mount Pleasant; her daughter, Darlene Johnson of Mount Pleasant; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Johnson of Mount Pleasant; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Lee Roy Newman of Mount Pleasant; a sister Marion Shurtleff of Mount Pleasant; and numerous nieces, nephews and family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lee Anderson Newman; her mother, Lucy Marion Sparks Newman; her husband, Haskell Johnson; her son, Dempsey Johnson; her son, Donald Johnson; two sisters and four brothers; and her grandchildren, Brian Johnson and Lisa Blalock Carpenter.
A visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 20 at Bates-Cooper-Sloan Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant.
