John and Elizabeth married in 1858, in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn, Indiana. After a few years they moved to Omaha, Nebraska, and, by 1880, they were in Washington County, Oregon, where they farmed.
John and Elizabeth were divorced shortly after he was incarcerated and, on the 1900 census, when he was a patient at the Oregon State Insane Asylum he was listed as having been born in February of 1823. It also notes that he emigrated from Germany in 1828. John had been committed to the Asylum because of dementia, after having lived at the Washington County Poor Farm subsequent to his and Elisabeth's divorce
