John was born in NeuElft, Bessarabia, So.Russia. He was about twenty-one years old when he accompanied his parents to America from Basserabia in 1889. He married Rosina Nies in 1890. John and Rosina had nine children: Henry E., Christina(died 20 days after birth), Maria M. (Mary), Richard E.(Dick), Emil H.(Bob), Elsie L., Arthur W., Theodore A.(Ted), and Ruth E. all born in Dickey Co. In 1889 he took up a homestead, 160 acres of land 16-1/2 miles south of Kulm. He was a constructive man in the development of the rough section of North Dakota.
