Funeral for Vernon Cody Patterson, 66, of Rusk ws held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Wallace Thompson Funeral Home Chapel at Rusk, with the Rev. Leroy Hassier and the Rev. Earl Cummings officiating.
Burial was in Atoy Cemetery.
Mr. Patterson died Friday night in a Jacksonville hospital from injuries received in a motorcycle-vehicle accident Aug. 8 in Rusk.
A native of Cohoma, Texas, he was a retired Air Force master sergeant. He served as a turret gunner on a B-25 bomber against the Japanese in World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars.
He also was a ranch worker and a former rodeo performer. He formerly was employed by the U. S. Treasury Department.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Opal Patterson of Rusk; one daughter, Paula Helm of Rusk; one sister Paulette Ritter of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers, Don Patterson of Hawaii and Willard Patterson; and two grandchildren, Cody and Amy Helm of Rusk.
Pallbearers were Stanley Chapman, Paul Cox, Fred Lunsford, Jim Roach and Louis Nelms.
Honorary pallbearers were members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9808 of Alto.
