Mrs Davis Last rites conducted
Funeral services were held this morning for Mrs W L Davis 87, in the chapel of Woodall Funeral Home. Mrs Davis, 810 Society Ave., died at Phoebe Putney Hospital Monday after a short illness.
She was the daughter of Congressman William E Smith and Caoline Williams of Albany. Her husband was the late Dr. W L Davis.
Mrs Davis attended Mrs A Stern's school, Wesleyan College, Macon and the Lucy Cobb Institute, Athens. In June 1889 she was married to Dr Davis. Active and prominent in the city's public and social life for years, she fostered and organized the Associated Charity Board, organized the Ladies Hospital Association and served as its treasurer several years. She served as president of the Albany Women's Club two years and the WCTU and taught the Eugenia Davis Sunday School class for 50 years.
Mrs Davis is survived by two daughters Mrs Sam Marshall and Mrs J B Lanier; one son W L Davis Jr.; and two sisters Mrs W N Ticknor and Miss Augusta Smith; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of Albany.
The funeral service was conducted by Dr C R Pittard, pastor of the Byne Memorial Baptist Church, assisted by the Rev A B Thomas and Rabbi Martin I Hinchin. Interment was in Oakview Cemetery. Pallbearers were M M Wiggings, James Merritt, Victor Geiger, Rembert Glass, Turner Ball, Charlie Smith and Walter Ellis.
