David was the son of Jacob Gathers and Mary Magdalena (Himes) Gathers. He married Margaret Ann Orr on November 26, 1867 in Clarion County, PA. They had ten children.

"Many of our townsmen are afflicted with the Western fever. Dr. Gathers has not been able to heal himself of the malady, and it is said he resolutely faces the west."

"Mr. Wilson and Mr. Gathers start for Kansas tomorrow. The doctor has been practicing medicine in this place about 11 years. As a community we feel that we are losing two good citizens. Mr McAnich takes the place of Dr. Gathers."
