Ezra's tombstone notes that he served in the 52nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company I, during the Civil War. John W. Aldrich, his brother, served with the 36th Illinois Regiment and was killed at the Battle of Adairsville in Georgia 18 May 1864.
After the war Ezra returned home and stayed on the Ananias Aldrich farm until 1869 when he moved to Burlington, IL. In 1874 he moved to Iowa with his new bride Ellen Freeland.
