The Rev. Mathews Franklin Allen Jr., retired chairman of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Virginia Union University, collapsed and died Sunday as he began the sermon at Providence Presbyterian Church in Powhatan County.

Several members of the congregation, trained in emergency medical treatment, and members of the Powhatan Rescue Squad tried unsuccessfully to revive him, said his wife, Thelma Lorraine Wells Allen.

The retired pastor from the Presbytery of the James was 75 and lived in Richmond.

A native of New York City, Dr. Allen received his undergraduate degree in 1941 from Bethel College in McKenzie, Tenn., and his master of divinity degree from Memphis Theological Seminary in 1945.

In 1970, he received his doctor of education degree in social and philosophical education from Columbia University under a joint program with Union Theological Seminary in New York City.

Ordained in 1943 by the Dallas (Texas) Presbytery, Dr. Allen served pastorates in Tennessee, Missouri and Texas.

From 1954 to 1962, he was director of adult and family education for the board of publication and Christian education of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Memphis. He also was general editor of church school publications for the board.

Dr. Allen was on the staff of the Board of Christian Education for the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. from 1962 to 1967.

He joined the faculty of Virginia Union University in 1969. He was coordinator for secondary education before being named department chairman. He retired in 1986.

In 1978, he was named pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church, which he served for three years.

Later, Dr. Allen served as stated supply minister at Rosewood Presbyterian Church. He was interim pastor of Providence Presbyterian Church in the late 1980s, and again in July 1996, said Mrs. Allen. He also was interim pastor of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Old Church and at First Congregational Christian Church in Chesterfield.

Dr. Allen was the co-author of three youth booklets in the Covenant Life Curriculum and was the author of the "Teacher's Book" for "Christians in the Family," published in 1970 by the John Knox Press.

Dr. Allen was a member of the board of the Irish Children's Summer Program of Richmond, which brings Catholic and Protestant children from homes in Londonderry to Richmond. The organization encourages mutual acceptance and appreciation for the children's faiths.

He was a member of the task force of the Roman Catholic-Presbyterian Richmond Peace Education Center.

In addition to his wife, survivors include include two daughters, Holly Jennings of Yakima, Wash., and Janice Allen of Minneapolis; three brothers, David Allen of Henderson, Texas, Jonathan Allen of Lancaster, Texas, and Paul Allen of Longview, Texas; and a sister, Rebecca Hugman of Irving, Texas.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 N. Fifth St.
