Gerald M. Troiano, 83, of Eastern Promenade died unexpectedly Wednesday at his residence.
Born here, a son of Michele and Michelina Frascolla Troiano, he attended local schools and graduated from Portland High School. Mr. Troiano attended Colby College as well as the University of Alabama.
During World War II, Mr. Troiano served with the Army and was stationed at Fort McKinley on Great Diamond Island.
As a young boy, he began working in the family business, the M. Troiano Fruit store, with his father and brother. After his father's retirement, Mr. Troiano continued the business until he retired in 1984. The business was widely known for fancy foods and fruit baskets.
Mr. Troiano was a daily communicant of St. Peter's Church.
He was a member of the Portland Boys' and Girls' Club, the Italian Heritage Club and the Portland Elks Club.
Mr. Troiano enjoyed football, playing cards and swimming with his friends at the Elks Club, and was extremely interested in the stock market.
His wife, Cynthia J. McGlinchey Troiano, died in 1964.
Survivors include a son of Cape Elizabeth; a daughter of Windsor, Conn.; a sister, Lucy Troiano of Portland; and five grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State St., where prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Monday, followed by a 10 a.m. funeral Mass in St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
