JOHN M. BROWNSON
A nephew of the late Captain J. 0. Wheeler, and who seems to have inherited his great uncles energy, public spirit and business capacity, as he has trod the pathway to fortune since 1865 with the steps of one who hesitated not, and who made no mistakes. Mr. Brownson was principally raised in Clinton, De Witt county, where his father was engaged in merchantile pursuits, until the breaking out of the war, when he joined the celebrated "Terry Rangers," and served in that gallant regiment until the conclusion of hostilities; when, for a short time he kept a grocery store in Victoria, which he quitted in 1867, and opened the first bank in Victoria. His business in this connection has steadily increased, until today the bank of Brownson & Sibley does a business not exceeded in magnitude by any in Western Texas. Mr. Brownson married about the year 1868 Miss Kate McDow, only daughter of Captain McDow, of Fayette county, and resides in his beautiful residence near the head of Bridge street. He is always foremost in all projects looking to the advancement of the interests of his town and county; and the place filled by John M. Brownson in our business and social circles would indeed be felt as an immense void were he to be called hence.
