Clara was sent to "Zion" by her mother with a group of church members when she was just 6 years old. She was met by her older brother Axel and lived with church members until her mother arrived some years later. She married Ambrose Stewart Higham when she was 19 and together they raised 6 children, 4 girls and 2 boys. She also helped raise her daughter, Ruth's family of 4 when Ruth's husband, Joseph Saxey died unexpectedly at a young age. She was widowed at age 69, but lived to be 85. She was an active member of the LDS Church.
